MAESTEG Park Football Club have brought in former player Lee Bridgeman as their new manager, writes Tony Poole.

Front-runner Bridgeman was with the Old Parish side during the 1998/99 campaign, scoring nine goals, before moving on to Goytre United.

Gareth Darks had already tendered his resignation, and last month Bridgeman responded to a media announcement from the second-division club.

The new Tudor Park supremo has vacated a post with South Wales Senior League Division One club Llanrumney United.

The Cardiff-based side last weekend rounded off a successful campaign in lifting the league’s C W Bruty Cup.

And Bridgeman is bringing his Llanrumney assistant manager Jamie Sherwood with him.

“I was delighted when Lee Bridgeman made contact with us last month, and readily accepted his offer to manage Maesteg,” said Maesteg Park’s long-serving secretary David Griffiths.

He continued: “Lee is very enthusiastic, and hopefully his enthusiasm will rub off on others.

“He has already been up to the club to meet our existing players, and has challenged them to fight for a place in the team next season.

“However, he has plans to bring in some new players, and there will certainly be competition for places in the side.

“Pre-season training is commencing on June 27, and he has already fixed up a pre-season fixture with his mate Nicky Tucker, who is now with Clevedon.’’

Maesteg, who were relegated from the top flight a year ago following a reign spanning over a quarter of a century, just managed to dodge another relegation this time around.

“To most people, Maesteg Park remain a big club - and they deserve better than a 13th-place finish in the second division,” explained Bridgeman.

He added: “Hopefully, I can get things going at the club, and all in all Maesteg Park is a challenge that I am relishing.’’
